Double DIN Navigation

There are a number of standardization governing bodies, and the one that handles a wide range of technology field standards is the German Institute for Standardization, or DIN for short. The Institute has established over 30,000 standards, but the one that is applicable to vehicle head units is International Standard ISO 7736, and defines them as 2” high by 7” wide for a standard DIN head unit and 4” high by 7” wide for double DIN head units in the US.

Double DIN navigation units are a relatively new innovation for vehicles that just a few years ago would have required specialized equipment and training and cost tens of thousands of dollars to install. Today it just requires some general tools and a few hours to get it up and running.
